Hello everyone! Is there anyone still out there? I apologize as i been busy with my newest guppy batch (about 4 months old now!) as well as my Freshwater Angelfish Fry (Eggs were laid about 12 days ago now). So please be patient with me!!
Enough talk! Now it's time for some Q&A!! So. I had some of you send in some questions....it's time for me two answer!! Questions are in bold! Answers are underlined!! ~~~~~~~~ 1) What colors do you breed in Guppies? ~~ As far as colors go, I think there all pretty! My last 4 or 5 batches have had colors ranging from all yellow; red; black; blue in the males to mixed colors such as Yellow and Red; Red and Black; and finally Yellow and Black in both males and females. I also have a month old Delta male I bred. Delta Guppies are just one color such as Red;Blue;Black;Yellow. Delta Guppies have NO patterns on them at all. If you need/want more info let me know! 2)What colors are female Guppies more attracted to, besides them just being bright colors? Are there any specifics? ~~ This is a good question! As far as colors go I've learned that bright colors such as Yellow, and Light Blue (found in Endler's Guppies) work well. For the darker colors, it just happens. Haha! There are no specifics. But I will tell you -in dark AND light colors- the brighter the color; the healthier the guppy which equals a better chance the female will breed with the male. Want/need more info? Post a message and let me know!! 3) What Traits should someone avoid breeding accidentally that can show up in any of these species of fish? ~~ This is another good question. One that I have had numerous times in both my Mollies and Guppies, is a HumpBack. There is no way to prevent this, unless you buy from a professional breeder, who knows the ancestors of the fish didn't have that trait. The Humpback trait just happens sometimes. It is a deformity in the fish's spine. My fish have lived fine with their HumpBacks, and I have a few that even outgrew them! -The spine is now straight so it fixed itself-. As for other traits, I would stay away from aggressive males and females. You don't want any males/females that will grow up being so aggressive that they kill the other fish in your tank. Aggression is something you may be able to break, by isolating your fish for awhile, then re-introducing them into your tank (post here or message me for info on how ). If you don't want to do that, put a lot of foliage- real or artificial plants- in your tank. They will often give the fish a sense of security. Questions? Comments? Post or message me! 4) Do you name your fish? (Just wondering...) ~~ Hahahaha. I like this question! I use to when I had one tank and fish. Now i have over 25 fish (babies not included), and it gets a bit tedious. Now for my species like my Freshwater Angelfish where i only 4 of them, yes. I name them. As for the rest like my guppies where I can have over 40 at a time... ( babies included) well...no. I do name my Adults though. 5) What fish are your favorite breed? ~~ AGH!!! You people make this hard! I swear you do this on purpose.... :/. I honestly can't pick!! I love them all! I think there all pretty! I like my mollies because there cute, and have a lovely personality. I like my guppies because of their colors and patterns, and my Angelfish because of their colors, patterns and bodies! My goldfish are beautiful, because of their personality and looks, and my Betta fish; I like them because of their color and personality as well! I bet your thinking "How can a fish have personality!?" Believe me when i say they can. They interact with each-other and I even have a fish that will let me pet him. Yes pet. I leave it at that. Haha! 6) How big can Angelfish get? ~~ Agh! Again! A Freshwater Angelfish can grow up to 4 inches in length and 8 inches in height. Now. I have two pair. My current breeding pair is large. To help, I measured my hand on a grided cutting table. Hello everyone! I apologize that I haven't posted! I just had a new batch of 22 guppy fry born from my lovely female, as well as a batch of Freshwater Angelfish eggs!! So it's been kind of busy here! I once again apologize! Please stick with me! So, I want to thank everyone who voted! I had 17 votes total! In the end Baby Guppie's won with a total of 6 votes, with Guppies coming in at a close second with 5 votes! The poll is now closed. One more huge thank you to everyone who looked, and voted!! ~Lauren Baby Guppies. Cute little thing's that can come out of nowhere, fast! They are extremely small, fast, and you can barely see them as they are practically see through! When born, they will go to the surface , but then immediately retreat to the closest plant. Be sure to have plenty of plants around for them, as even their own mother will eat them, or try to eat them.
If you think you are expecting baby Guppies, your female needs to be doing 3 of these things... 1) Is she hiding in a corner (most likely the back corner) of your tank? 2) Look at her tail and dorsal fin. Is the color fading? 3) If you have plants, is she hiding in them? 4) Is she near the heater a lot? 5) Do you have other fish in the tank? If so she may hide in a corner, or try to, to get away from the other fish in hopes of reducing her own stress. 6) Look at the bottom of her stomach. Is it flat? Does it look square? If your female Guppy is doing at least 3 of those things, she may be going into labor. If it's not labor, then most likely stress. If you have other males in there with her then she will get stressed out. Another thing to look for, are the males chasing her? If the males are chasing her the best thing do to is move her into a breeder net. If you do not have a breeder net, you can purchase one at your Wal-Mart store for around $3. ~~ After she has the babies, take her out immediately. She will eat them. Once you've gotten all your babies safely in the breeder net, you can try feeding them. I recommend using Hikari Tropical First Bites. You can purchase Hikari Tropical First Bites at Pet-Co for $2.50. If you do not want to buy them food you can make them food! Take some fish food flakes and pulverize them. Then take water from the tank the babies were born in, and add the water to the flakes until it is paste like. Once paste like you can take a toothpick and stick the end in it, and the put it back in the water. The paste will fall off the toothpick and into the water for the babies to eat. **Do not make to much as it will spoil quickly** ~~ I suggest keeping the temperature for your fry anywhere from 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit for the first 2-3 months. ~~ At around two weeks of age you should be seeing color in some of your babies. Those are the males. The males will get color around 2 weeks of age, the females around 4, and even as late as 5 weeks. The males fully mature at 6 weeks, and the females fully mature around 3 months. Your males will be bright colors such as red, yellow, blue. Your females will have more dull colors, such as brown, tan etc. Your males will have color on their bodies as well as patterns, where as your females will have color only on their tail. ~~ Once you know the sex of your babies, I suggest separating them, as females can start reproducing anywhere from 10-20 weeks old. They stop reproducing around 20-34 months of age. Keep in mind the female can drop anywhere from 2-200 babies over a 3-5 week period. Normally they will only have anywhere from 30-60. They can have babies every month and can store sperm from a male they have bred with. I would also watch your male mollies, if you have any, as Mollies and Guppies can cross-breed. **Your Guppy will reproduce more quickly in Brackish water!** ~~~~ I hope this helps! If anyone has any questions, don't be shy! Ask away! Thank you again! ~Lauren Hello, everyone! So, I just wanted to put a survey out there of what you think our first blog should be about?? |
